DuPont receives quality award from Takata Petri

100% satisfaction with DuPont service

Hemel Hempstead, November 16, 2005 — DuPont is the first resin supplier to be named recipient of a Takata Petri "Quality - First" General Management Award 2005. The award recognises the company’s outstanding service performance in the provision of both material and technical support for the development of airbag safety systems. Takata Petri is the European representation of the Takata Corporation (Tokyo/ Japan), and is a leading manufacturer of innovative occupant safety systems for numerous global automotive OEMs. Its awards are presented on a two-yearly basis to a range of business partners which deserve recognition for their quality standards.

According to statistics presented by Takata Petri, DuPont’s service performance over the last year has been faultless: there was not one single mistake in product quality, or in deliveries and lead times, leading to Takata Petri’s “100% satisfaction” with DuPont. “We value our partnership with DuPont on developing future, state-of-the-art technology for safe and cost effective airbag systems for the European car industry,” commented Takata Petri’s raw materials purchasing manager, Stefan Wallusch.

The cooperation between the two companies started over ten years ago, with the adoption of DuPont™ Hytrel® DYM polymers – a special composition of Hytrel® thermoplastic polyester elastomer – in driver and passenger airbag deployment doors. Hytrel® DYM polymers have been specifically developed for such applications and exhibit a wide range of stiffness characteristics and easy processibility. Later developments between the two companies have seen the use of two-component airbag door solutions, combining hard and soft grades of Hytrel®, and the application of super-tough grades of glass-reinforced DuPont™ Zytel® nylon, tailor-made for structural airbag containers.

As the partnership between DuPont and Takata Pertri has flourished, the two companies have entered into an alliance, seeing DuPont established as a strategic supplier. “This new arrangement has been to the benefit of both parties in their pursuit of providing best-in-class airbag systems with low development costs,” explains Thomas Werner, key account manager at DuPont Engineering Polymers.

Beyond DuPont’s outstanding performance in terms of material quality and supply, Takata Petri values the company’s comprehensive technical support. This includes moulding expertise and tool development support, part design and CAE support in early development stages as well as material development and joint system development, including paint evaluations for visible airbag covers.

The DuPont Engineering Polymers business manufactures and sells Crastin® PBT and Rynite® PET thermoplastic polyester resins, Delrin® acetal resins, Hytrel® thermoplastic polyester elastomers, DuPont™ ETPV engineering thermoplastic vulcanizates, Minlon® mineral reinforced nylon resins, Thermx® PCT polycyclohexylene dimethyl terephthalate, Tynex® filaments, Vespel® parts and shapes, Zenite® LCP liquid crystal polymers, Zytel® nylon resins and Zytel® HTN high-performance polyamides.
